Karen Linder’s “Spring Petals” Opens April 5
Ming Toy Gallery is pleased to host Karen Linder's "Spring Petals" during the month of April. The opening reception is Friday, April 5, 2024, from 6:00 to 9:00pm at 6066 Maple Street - right next door to Au Courant in downtown Benson.
Linder, primarily a self-taught artist, has studied with Claudia Alvarez, Laura Nothern, Anna Youngers, Joseph DeRozza, Thomas Hamilton, Stephen Randall and Molly Mangiamelli. She has exhibited in many group and solo shows, including the Bemis Art Center, Gallery 1516, Modern Arts Midtown, Hot Shops Art Center, Against the Wall Gallery (Lincoln, NE), U.C. Santa Barbara, Thistle Fine Art (Rockport, MA), Carnegie Arts Center (Alliance, NE) and Heritage Art Gallery (Council Bluffs).
Linder’s formal education and training is in biology, specifically the science of “cells” or cytology. It is a visual study that has been described as being more art than science. A cytotechnologist examines cells with a microscope, looking for slight alterations in their normal appearance indicating the presence of disease. After 30 years working in her professional career, cells of the human body continue to serve as inspiration in Linder’s art.
The patterns depicted in Linder’s petal paintings are similar to the microscopic appearance of glandular cell patterns. She has represented cells in both oil painting and bronze works. To the casual observer, they are abstract works of art, but they are realism in a world that we cannot visualize with the naked eye.
Linder also enjoys painting other subject matter in traditional impressionist and en plein aire styles. Her artworks are included in more than 200 personal and institutional collections, including the University of Nebraska Medical Center, the U.S. and Canadian Academy of Pathology and Bridges Trust. She is also a business woman and author of the book "The Women of Berkshire Hathaway."
"Spring Petals" is on display through April 27, 2024. Starting April 5, regular gallery hours are:
Wednesday: Noon to 5pm
Thursday: Noon to 8pm
Friday: Noon to 5pm
Benson First Friday: 6 to 9pm
Saturday: 9am to 1pm
